The room itself was very tastefully done. Room service was prompt. The manager, Nazlee, was friendly, accommodating and helpful.

One of the staff at the reception had a sour face especially since we explained that we wanted to check out after the first night despite booking for two nights. The pillows were not firm enough so I didn't sleep at all on the first night there. As a result, we only stayed one night although we had booked for two. There was a bit of a fuss when we stated that we wanted to check out, as the staff at the reception wanted to charge us for two nights even though we explained that I was not able to sleep because of the pillows. Fortunately, Nazlee came to the rescue and assured us that we would only be charged for one night. To his credit, he did his best to check us into another hotel of our choice.

Very nice room with beautiful furniture, and a private jacuzzi in the bathroom. The staff was very friendly, and went out of their way to help me with everything I needed.

The room was extremely noisy (also during the night), which made it very hard to work or sleep! The owners obviously spent a lot of money on the decoration of the hotel, so I don't know why they did not spend a bit more on isolation. The breakfast was very good during the weekend, but on Monday morning, there was almost no breakfast (only toast, not even juice available). Maybe they were still preparing it, but if they say that breakfast starts at 7, they should have it ready by 7.15!

Heritage hotel, rooms are nicely decorated, friendly staff

Quite a few teething problems during our 6-night stay, staff did not follow up on complaints, but once manager involved issues were resolved satisfactorily

The hotel is in a set of beautifully restored Chinese shophouses that have been carefully and thoughtfully converted into a hotel. The designers preserved or restored period features while minimizing the environmental and energy impact of the building and its users. The rooms are large and comfortable, with big beds, a mix of modern and period furniture from the region, and original art. The bathrooms also are large and comfortable; mine had a walk-in shower and separate jacuzzi tub. The hotel had all the amenities I look for, most notably, free Wifi. All members of the staff I encountered were exceptionally friendly and helpful.

My only suggestions are that the hotel add a lighted makeup mirror to the bathroom and improve the bedside lighting (make it brighter or closer to the bed) to make it possible to read in bed.

A very new hotel equipped to the highest standards. Some snagging issues to be resolved as it has just opened but the staff are extremely helpful and friendly. The restaurant is outstanding- I have never eaten so well during a hotel stay!

  • Couple

    well-designed hotel, excellent staff

some of bathroom facilities are spoilt. Water ran all over the floor when you take a shower.

    Interior design, architecture, location, staff

    It was all good! :-)

  • Group of friends

Our first impression of Hotel Penaga was the outstanding presentation and individuality of each of the rooms. The attention to detail was very tasteful and not over done. We found the staff to be extremely proud of their environment and went out of their way to ensure that our every need was met. The location was excellent, being central to great eating areas, historic sites and good quality but inexpensive shopping.

We would have preferred a buffet breakfast as you can select exactly what you like, in the order that you prefer. This also enables a more speedy exit if you are wanting to get out and about.

  • Older travelers

The staff are so welcoming to this radically restored Chinese rest house in downtown Penang. Beautifully finished with fine repro colonial furnishings. Only open 7 months so spangly new still yet with loads of character. Strong focus on being eco friendly. Close to downtown Georgetown and myriad local eateries.

Only negative was the constant traffic outside our room "with balcony." Staff talk of double glazing being fitted. Maybe judder bars on road outside - or even restriction on traffic speeds overnight??

  • Family with children

    Location, style

Swimming pool and lots of Mosquitos in the room

That's my favourite hotel in georgetown. Staffs are friendly and helpful. The location is close to lots of tourist attractions. My room was excellent - two storey mansion with two bedrooms, balcony and jacuzzi.

The price on booking. Com does not include tax or service fee.

  • Couple

Lovely building, atmosphere, service and pool. Great location too.

Pool could be a bit bigger.

  • Couple

The staffs are excellent. The room we stayed in was gorgeous, spacious and nicely decorated. The location of the hotel is in the middle of George Town and walkable to places of interest in the city. The local restaurant across the hotel gives more of unique local flavor to the boutique hotel.

  • Older travelers

The staff were very friendly and attentive. The room was beautiful and exceeded expectations. It was comfortable vergeing on luxury, with every ammenity you could wish for.

  • Single

Room is very spacious, bed is extremely comfy. Bathroom is equipped with a jacuzzi and a shower. Staff is extremely helpful. it's located at the edge of george town and is within walking distance to little India and the Oriental & Eastern Hotel.
